Diocletian had insisted on stern effect where able-bodied boys were born. Volunteers could still be found, particularly after Anastasia's increased their pay. Foreign allies also fought alongside the army, and were now known as Fedorot troops rather than auxiliaries. The disposition of the empire's armies remained as it had been since the formal divide of the empire into eastern and western halves.
