The Disadvantages of Learning a Language

Trie: It's so true and it's so complicated because on the one hand there is the kind of active gatekeeping and almost casual gatekeeping. On the other hand, there are all of these larger historical forces that are also playing out that inform people's decisions consciously or not in terms of how much they want to hold on to their language. I wonder what it would have looked like if they were more fluent in Armenian if that language would have lived on in my family. And so kind of like unraveling all of those threads and trying to make sense of it, but then at the end of the day, it lives in my body, like my lack of access to those languages
