The Importance of Active Memory in Memories
I think one of the things memoirs struggle with most is writing about a really strong feeling after the fact. It can be really hard to access those feelings and then translate them to the page. What I figured out with this book, and I wish I'd learned it earlier, was trying to remember how certain experiences felt in my body. For me, it is actually, like, a really physical process. It's being aware and, like, thinking back to how those moments felt physically. And that's what allows me to write about them.
