The Origins of the Black Hole

In 1971, Cygnus X-1 was the first black hole to be discovered. Black holes are hundreds of thousands to billions of times more massive than our Sun. LIGO Gravitational Observatory measured gravitational waves from a black hole merger for the first time in 2015. The largest black hole which has been discovered is at the center of the galaxy Home 15A - 700 million light-years from Earth.
