Indira Gandhi's Emergency Suspension of the Constitution

India's real crisis with democracy arguably was in 1975 when longtime predecessor Indira Gandhi declared emergency suspended the constitution. Under a new development today, citizens lose their right to appear before courts of law if arrested under the emergency. No clear reason for what the alleged fence was other than to send a signal that even someone like the BBC was not immune from government interference. But Mr Modi didn't invent that playbook.
