i wanted to make a statement about how immigrant women have revolutionized food in america. And you did that in part by setting their stories next to arguably the most successful woman cook in the history of this country who wasn't an emigrant. That was something that my wonderful editor at nort end, i mal naturedroly, kind of persuaded me to do. In spite of the fact that madeline herself was so, so talented and had such a fresh way of thinking about food, and it was so principle and everything like that, she dared speak out against people like julia child.
