The History of the Byzantine Empire

The Byzantine Empire as it stood at the death of Anastasia's in 518. A new unit within the army was the Bakalarii, personal guards attached to a commander. The major internal problem the Empire faced was disunity owing to theological dispute over Monophysitism. But there are potential allies too, especially those who share the Empire's Christian beliefs. Christianity has brought massive social and political change which are at work transforming the Empire's culture and daily life.
