The Importance of Christianity in the Sustaining of Democracy

Christian nationalism is built on an interpretation of history that connects America's founding and future success with its Christian heritage, reference to a mythic past. In fact, when you compare how Christian nationalist ideology and traditional measures of religious commitment, we find that sometimes they work in exact opposite. Insisting that Christianity and democracy must go together seems to give some people a sense of validation and relevance. It cloaks an agenda of tribal prerogative in the language of selfless service. And so we keep telling ourselves that democracy will not survive without Christianity because it is the myth behind every compromise we make to get cultural or political power.
