There was a largely an intermixing of the cultures. You have, you have an assimilation that took place in Mexico and in these areas where the Spanish who came over intermarried with the Indians. They saw themselves as very separate. But what happened with the Catholics is you had Franciscans and the Jesuits who were willing to risk everything for their faith.
