The Decline of Cross-Holdings in Japan Inc
There is almost direct correlation between the focus on earnings and the decline in cross-holdings. The first companies that were it became obvious to the managers in Japanese companies that as a matter of survival they could no longer continue to focus exclusively on revenues and market share. Buffett saw when he came in was a domestic shareholder base that was much more aligned with the interest of Berkshire Hathaway.
