Ariwara nonarihira's father was the imperial prince abo, son of retired emperor hase. Despite his complicated family background he found a place for himself in courtly politics. He married the daughter of ki no arisune, leader of a political clique surrounding another member of the imperial family, emperor montoku kino. The two then had a son, the future emperor sewa, who was put on the throne in eight 58 when his fa montoku did.
