Herb Carnegie: The First Black Star in the NHL

Herb Carnegie could have been an all-time great if he had been in the NHL. He played for the Quebec Provincial League in the 1940s and was voted MVP of the league three separate times. During his first year playing junior hockey with the Toronto Young Rangers in 1938, Khan Smythe the owner and manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs saw him play. According to Khan Smythe I would take Carnegie tomorrow for the Maple Leaf if someone can turn them away. Herb passed away in 2012 but here he is speaking to Inside Hockey in 2009: "I got that statement when I was 18. How would you feel? ... It's horrible"
