I'm a big advocate for multiple choice questions, they could be used for checking for understanding. But I still find that some teachers have either looked at to use them or they think they're too easy. And designing those multiple choice questions really tells you what students do and don't knowWhat the misconceptions are. So yeah, we've used multiple choice questions,. one route through diagnostic questions for that particular purpose, just to assess knowledge. Do they know the nuts and bolts of the subject, where's the gaps? Then we readdress those gaps and re-teach them in the classroom.
