The Importance of a Different World View
The arguments that we're trying to understand are held by people with their own motivations and histories. It may not be your history, but to really understand the issues as others see them, we need to lop an ability to sympathetically inhabit a different world view for period of time. Think about gun control issues from the pospective of liberal urbanites versus the rural poor or the inner city poor. The same is true for abortion rights issues from the perspective of richer munities versus poorer communities.
