The Origins of Punishment in Ancient Law

In the ancient codes of Mesopotamia and I think China, there's a feature that jumps out at a modern reader. The punishments prescribed were often different and dependent on the status of the offender and the relative status of the victim. In Rome as well, Roman citizens, there was a real sense of citizens being roughly equal. India had the caste system which was very heavily represented in the laws.
