The invention of tradition is an edited volume by eric hobsbom and terence ranger, first published in 19 83. His overall idea is that many things that we think have been around since time immemorial are invented very relatively recently. We'll talk about their functions in a second, but it's to make people, you know, think, believe and behave in very specific ways.
