Plato's Republic
In his readings of the Republic over the years, I've gone back and forth about some of the concrete political proposals that Plato has Socrates make in the Republic. There are some which we might look back on and think very highly of Plato for. But at the same time, I think that we should not run away from the thought that Plato is seriously proposing some things that make us uncomfortable. In other cases to do with wisdom and virtue maybe we should allow Plato challenges a little bit but we should be ready to entertain the thought that some of these proposals are meant seriously.
