Are Moral Convictions Related to a Decrease in Trust in Institutions?

In the last twenty or thirty years, there has been a decline in trust in institutions writ large. When we are morally convinced about something, we don't usually need evidence to support our conclusions. This might be one reason an increase in the intensity of our moral convictions might be linked to a decrease in our interest in scientific evidence. It's also linked to a disregard for experts.
