For now and for the foreseeable future at least, the Higgs field is in a state called metastable. If it moved into that lower energy state, that would be it for not just human existence, but for everything in the universe. A vacuum bubble could grow with the help of a microscopic black hole which we might actually create inside one of our particle colliders here on Earth.
