Inequality Shapes Battlefield Performance

The average number of ethnic groups in an army is five, which means that almost every army has to oncile diverse diversity within its ranks. As you become more unequal, you throw away the advantages of diversity so you don't get the what we call the diversity bonus. You sow seeds of mistrust and confusion between the different ethni groups in your army. So they're not going to want to trust each other. And when it hits the fan and there's an opportunity to run, these groups will be organized and capable of doing it. People are unwilling to fight for a state that has treated their particular group poorly. It just throws hat into the mix.
