The Fluidity of Gender Performance on Social Media
Gender performance is perhaps even more fluid online than off. Kate Mann uses the term care mongering to describe the way that women are penalized for not meeting inordinate expectations for caring. Female coded social media accounts might be expected to demonstrate care and concern through their constant presence on the apps. And I'd be lying by a mission if I didn't tell you that being labeled cold and uncaring online is one of my biggest personal and professional fears. It absolutely shapes and often chills what I choose to say and create.
