There's something deeply ironic about this, isn't it? I mean, you have these two people who are speaking about high ideals and about the importance of equality. A lot of times human beings don't act according to what they know is the right thing to do. This was his way of life. It's what he knew. He felt that he helped to found a country. The american revolution was the most important thing in his life. And the tragedy is he couldn't seeat after the union is formed, that the thing that would split it apart would be the institution of slavery.
