Hamilton's intelligence was so bad he didn't even know cromwell was in the vicinity. His most veteran troops had been left behind to garrison the north because of personal rivalries among his officers. The arrival of the scottish army only compounded the food shortages caused by the crappy, terrible, no good summer of 16 forty eight. And all they did was alienate potential supporters. By now, hamilton recognized that he had a real, live battle on his hands.
