When do you really start to properly grip, truly understand ideas? It isn't when their novel is the kid that is learning Pythagoras' theorem. There is this maturation process that happens where understanding occurs. And I don't think this is controversial. People like Hugh Burkhardt were writing about this in 1980 or 1981. But if the problem solving demands are high, the mathematical content demands have to be low.
