True Discourse Is Doomed to Error
True discourse presumes that a signifier can have a referent in the world. But Lacan here is pointing out to the way that signifiers point not to stuff, but to other signifiers. So you have this web of signifiers that Lacan thinks is more important than the quote web of reference that true discourse would try and put forward. And that's why he says that it would prove that true discourse is doomed to error because in the end, signifiers don't point to stuff. In order to understand one element, you have to understand another element, which in turn required you to understand anotherelement and another element and another element.
