There was very much theory that underlined this work. Spearman had G theory and had a very specific way that he thought that existed. Thirstone had primary mental abilities. He had a very clear sense of how those existed. The thing that was not done at this time was imposing a restricted, a priori structure on the data and making that a testable hypothesis. What we got to do is take some of what we talked about poolside and combine it with things that we talked about campfire side and mix those two together in a way that allows us to cross those streams of inferential probability and hypothesis testing with a factor model.
