Tides of History

CHAPTER

Farming in the Aegean

There were farmer colonists at Knossos on Crete almost exactly 9,000 years ago. They showed up near Izmir on the western coast of Anatolia about halfway up the coastline before it gets to what's now Istanbul. Within 200 years, about 8,500 years ago, that's 6,500 BC, they were on both sides of the Sea of Marmer where Istanbul is now located. This was the beginning of the Neolithic in Europe, the origin from which all agriculture and the continent ultimately sprang.
