Katherine Johnson co-authored a paper in 1960 called Determination of Azimuth Angle at Burnout for placing a satellite over a selected Earth position. This was the first time any woman, not just a black woman, not a black person, any woman got credit for a paper coming out of this flight research division. The next year in 1961 is when the big moment in the movie is from. Alan Shepard was going to become the first American in space. He landed somewhere in the Atlantic Ocean and she calculated what that path would look like. In 1962 they were about to send our first American human into orbit around the Earth.
