"I don't think of the nation as one big as one big community in that sense," he says. Madison assumes an incredible amount of diversity, which is called factionalism. "It's not just a bunch of individuals. It's actually a bunch of groups of individuals." He believes there has to be some degree of subsidiarity in order for national feeling and free society.
