Is There a Mutual Respect Between Author and Subject?
Do writers have an ethical responsibility when they're writing about a real person, especially someone who is alive? I think it's a really complicated question to which there's no simple answer. If somebody wrote a book about me, I don't think I would be strong enough not to read it. Nobody is going to write a book about us but we can critique and discard art that feels disingenuous. This is the eternal question about writers: what do you have to say for other people in your life?
