Putin is trying to reassert russia as a great power player in the world. He did not want his own population to mimic their brethren anin ukraine and say, we don't like the direction our country's going. It should be no surprise if he does so again. Think puton is one of these leaders who will push forward as long as there's no significant resistance. But he's not suicidal. He's not delusional, he's not crazy.
