The choice of Ramon Carral as Mexico's vice president in 1910 set off a wave of political agitation. Deas himself admitted that his choice was driven by a desire to find an unpopular man who would be unable to threaten his position. As long as Deas remained in place, the elevation of an unpopular vice president was merely an annoyance.
