The Darkness of Alida's Home

Jane Coltis emailed a question to the BBC World Book Club. Sophie Oxen says she was conscious of creating an atmosphere for the darkness of the book. There is one aspect of Alida's home that is almost cheerful, we see her bottling fruits and fermenting things. We hear a reading now of Alida at work in her kitchen.
