The History of the Bell Telephone Company
The Bell Telephone Company held the patent for telephones. The company licensed the rights to regional affiliates, allowing them to set up their own local telephone service in cities like New York and Chicago. Eventually every town of a certain size would become part of this larger Bell network. But most were affiliates, which is why they fought desperately here in the 1880s and 90s to hold on to their patents.
