The Enlightenment, Is It Academic?

In the early 1600s, you know, late 1500s is really when you're starting to get the Bible in the common language of the people. And so by this enlightened period, that's kind of the first time in history where everyone you've grown up with has had access to the Bible in their own language. So does it have anything to do with a more common understanding of the scriptures? Is this shift in thinking entirely academic? I would still call it academic, but it is definitely the fruit.
