The Importance of Control in Opium Production

Afghanistan is the biggest opium producer in the world. The Taliban banned cultivation of poppies after 2001 invasion by US. A lot of farmers switched back to poppy farming because it was more profitable. Farmers would bribe local commanders and governors so they could be safe from government destruction.
