The book underscored how much contact there was between christians and moslems trad especially, that they these societies were very familiar with one another in all kinds of ways. There are all these incidents where italian merchants had some merchandise, including some slaves, they tended to be kind of mixed in with other goods and commodities. They would bring them to the markets in alexandria and cairo on behalf of mameluke traders, or the mamluke government, even. And they were working sometimes almost hand in glove.
