The Relationship Between Nation and Empire

Ukraine is part of the former empires which tried to define itself as a nation state. Russia sees itself as eternally enlarging, my metaphor is that Ukraine has clear cut borders and plurality of centers. Putin has directly quoted and presented himself as Peter I, so he's presenting himself as a leader of this empire in fact.
