CHAPTER

The History of the Habsburg Empire

The Habsburg Empire was split into two parts of roughly equal size. The Kingdom of Hungary had total independence over internal affairs such as taxes, infrastructure and language policy. And the other half was simply the rest of the empire, the various regions that might be more German, more Slavic, more Italian. Each realm, so-called Austria and Hungary, had its own parliament or Diet which controlled its own ministries of internal affairs. Also at the same time the empire as a whole would have three joint ministries appointed by the crown. As of 1900 out of the 13 million rural residents of Hungary, about 10 million were completely landless peasants.
