How Many Generations of Stars Will There Be?

We've always thought that eventually galaxies would use up their raw materials in terms of making stars. So we were surprised when we looked out the galaxies and discovered how many are already dead. How many have stopped making stars well before we expected them to. And so is that something that we've always believed in, that galaxies can change? Or did we think thetwod, you know, swirl around forever?
