The idea that societies all develop and transform according to the same sort of pattern. And it became a way of justifying european imperialism in colonization. But i think we've largely rejected them, but many of these ideas are built into our archaeological models. Even in terms of the popular imagination, this idea that things obviously get bigger as they get more complex is something that we often unconsciously accept without really questioning it.
