The No Flow, No Growth Theory of Coarctation

The theory of migration of smooth muscle cells is drives predominantly from the clinical observation that if they administer prostaglandins, it can keep the coarctation open for a period of time until an intervention can take place. The hypothesis supporting the no flow, no growth theory comes largely from the observation that coarctated seems to go along with pretty much any lesion where there is decreased flow traversing the isthmus or the area between the left subclavian and the ductus arteriosus.
