The Composers of the Late Romantic Period
This music can't be understood as part of a tradition of the late romantic composers, or even early 20th century composers. It's no wonder that music like this hasn't found its way onto the concert stage - it simply doesn't fit in. Eliot Carter went the other way to stunning amounts of density. He would sometimes split an orchestra of strings into 50 independent parts and create total cacophony.
