Oliver Cromwell's Conquest of Ireland
Oliver Cromwell has become notorious for his treatment of Ireland. The British political class across the whole 17th century was very colonialist they were brutal and racist, writes Anna O'Brien. But there is a danger though we're focusing too much on Oliver Cromwell in that although Cromwell was personally very cruel in Ireland I think having this one sort of bogeyman figure does let the British political class off the hook a little bit.
