Paranoia and the Idea of Referencing

Idea of reference is when patients say that something is related to what is happening. I usually equate it to a pattern or thoughts, which are self-referential but not pathological. Would you put paranoia in thought content? You know, you can't. It doesn't necessarily say that a patient has schizophrenia or other psychotic illnesses.
