The Odyssey or Defense?

In a hypothetical, what would a world have to look like where I feel like a defense or the odyssey against the problem of people would not be successful? The obvious case would just be maximal suffering that is unrelenting. So if there is a world where creatures suffer at their maximum and the suffering is unrelenting, I don't think it's the odyssey or defense would be possible in that kind of world. It's funny, we can almost do the reverse with you. We could start with a world of maximal pleasure that's unrelenting. And then we start turning the dial and adding suffering.
