The value that lung volumes can bring to patients with say chronic obstructive pulmonary disease who have dyspnea out of proportion to their airflow obstruction on spirometry. We know that reductions in inspiratory capacity is directly correlated with exertional symptoms and findings of dynamic hyperinflation during exercise. There's a variety of other tests that we can do to answer specialized questions in the lab.
