When the book came out, it was derided by some critics as an anti christian book. And yet, your reaction on reading it is, this is one of the most christian books ever read. A lot of that can be explained by the section where she is living with a her cousin, sinjin,. spelled saint john, but pronounced sinjin. I so he is very stern and really not very charitable. He is, in fact, in love with a woman. It's that he conceives so strongly of religious duty as to be very cold and unfeeling. In fact, he proposes to jane in possibly the most unromantic, unpersuasive way
