Maggie blackhawk's work was a significant influence on how i thought about petitioning. She laid out the history of why legislatures and other bodies that received petitions felt obligated to do something about them. The idea that anyone can kind of be a supplicant before the ruler and say like i need this i you know please help me is an ancient tradition.
