The germans were outnumbered five to one. They didn't know the extent, mind you, but they knew they were outnumbered. In his memoirs, manstein said he probably should have simply told hitler that the attack was hopeless. Nobody dared to be blunt withHitler because it was probabbly the last time ye were blunt with hitler. I mean, he was manstein because he survived the war as obviously a self provationist at best.
